Booking
How do I book?
What’s the difference between Viator and Airbnb?
The content is the same. On Viator it’s a private tour for your group only (up to 6 travellers); on Airbnb you join a small group of up to 10 guests. See the comparison.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before (1 day on Airbnb) for a full refund. Exact terms follow the policy of the platform you booked on.
What are the start times?
There are usually starts at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00. You’ll see the current times when booking.
The experience
Do I have to buy a carpet?
Absolutely not. The experience is first and foremost about learning. The phrase guests repeat most in their reviews is “I never felt pressured”.
Where do we meet?
At the German Fountain on Sultanahmet Square (Binbirdirek, At Meydanı Cd, 34122 Fatih), a few minutes’ walk from Sultanahmet station on the T1 tram line. The experience ends in Çemberlitaş. See the map.
How long is it, and in which language?
About 2 hours, in English.
Can children join?
Yes. Children aged 2 and over are welcome, and infants can sit on laps. Viator offers reduced rates for kids.
Is it accessible?
The experience is listed as wheelchair and stroller accessible, and service animals are welcome. If you have specific needs, please message in advance.
What’s included?
Guiding by a licensed cultural expert, Turkish tea or coffee, a live weaving demonstration, and expert insight into motifs, materials and quality.
Buying a carpet
How can I tell a carpet is hand-made?
Turn it over, check that the fringe is a continuation of the warp, and look for small irregularities. All seven checks are in the buyer’s guide.
Should I bargain?
Bargaining is a natural part of Turkish bazaar culture, but it is never required. İsrafil guides you through choosing and bargaining.
Can my carpet be shipped home?
Ask the shop about shipping options, insurance and cost before you buy, and get everything in writing. Antique carpets may require an export certificate.
The book
Where can I buy the book?
It’s available on Amazon as Kindle, paperback and hardcover. The Kindle edition can be read free with Kindle Unlimited.
What language is the book in?
English, 133 pages, with illustrations by Océane Taveneau.
Do I need any prior knowledge?
No. The book avoids unnecessary complexity and takes readers step by step from basic forms to deeper interpretation.
