Overview

This experience takes place in a historic caravanserai where merchants once rested and traded. Instead of simply looking at carpets, you learn to read them: to recognise motifs, judge quality and understand value.

Your guide is İsrafil Öncel, licensed Istanbul guide and author of How to Read a Turkish Carpet. Over Turkish tea he tells the story of the craft, and then you watch artisans at work on the loom.

Finally, you browse a curated collection of traditional, vintage, tribal and modern pieces. As guests often point out, there is no pressure to buy. If you do fall in love with a carpet, İsrafil helps you choose and guides you through bargaining.

The venue: a caravanserai

Caravanserais were inns for merchants travelling routes such as the Silk Road. In the city they took the form of the han: multi-storey courtyard buildings offering merchants lodging, storage for their goods and stables for their animals.

The streets around the Grand Bazaar are still lined with these hans. Today, under the same vaults, carpets are folded, looms are working and stories are still being told.
