How to Read a Turkish Carpet
From Knot to Story
Most people look at a Turkish carpet; very few know how to read one. This clear, accessible guide decodes the motifs, patterns and meanings woven into Turkish carpets, step by step.
- Recognise key motifs such as the ram’s horn, amulet, eye and tree of life
- Understand the difference between motif and pattern
- Interpret the role of colour in conveying meaning
- Trace cultural continuity from Central Asia to Anatolia

A carpet has a language too. And like any language, it is understood by learning its structure.
İsrafil Öncel taught languages for fifteen years before turning to carpets. Today he is a licensed Istanbul guide, an author and an independent researcher preparing for a PhD in the philosophy of art, and he reads carpets the way he once taught languages.
Loved by travellers from everywhere.
